Major Collapse Threatens Americans' Way of Life

People are fearing the worst this week over one of the biggest collapses in recent memory.

No, I'm not talking about Bear Stearns and America's financial sector meltdown.  Those people had it coming for a long time.  They come and go like a bad flu.

I'm talking about one of the great salmon fisheries of the west coast.  It seems that the fall Chinook Salmon has all but disappeared from the Sacramento River watershed.

The Chinook salmon that swim upstream to spawn in the fall, the most
robust run in the Sacramento River, have disappeared. The almost
complete collapse of the richest and most dependable source of Chinook
salmon south of Alaska left gloomy fisheries experts struggling for
reliable explanations — and coming up dry.
